Relation between education and job

In general, female’s enrolment in primary, secondary and tertiary education is more than male in Philippine. It means women should acquire more opportunity to engage in labor force because of their higher education level. The numbers of women who are professional and technical workers are therefore more than men. According to the Global Gender Gap Report 2010, there is around 60% of female participate in these occupation compare with 37% of male in average. However female’s labor force participation is lesser than male in overall. In 2010, for example, there are 80% of male labors while there are just 51% of female labors. It implied that the relationship between education and job is partly connection in Philippine.


It is partly connected because of the traditional role of women. In Philippine, female, especially married women, are usually regarded as the homemakers of the family and they should allocate their time on doing housework rather than on their business. Basically, women play an important role in taking care of their children because some of the studies in the Philippines reveal that children who less than 4 years old has a bad effect on mother’s decision to participate in labor force. It implied that women cannot fulfill the requirement of minimum working hours. So, it limited the opportunity for married women to find a job even though they have good education.

On the other hand, women are encouraged to participate in labor force as Women in Philippines are relatively less discriminated by the society. For the problem of gender inequality, the government had already set up legal framework to protect women’s status and right in the community, for example, the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women. In addition, the government also ensures the working environment in order to stimulate more females to become a labor worker. For example, the law list out that “State shall protect working women by providing safe and healthful working conditions, taking into account their maternal functions, and such facilities and opportunities that will enhance their welfare and enable them to realize their full potential in the service of the nation”.(According to the paper of Participaion of Women in Philippines Politics and Society.) It believed that the legal framework is one of the factors to describe why female engage in labor market.

Success of Philippine corporate women belies plight of majority

Though the general labor force participation of women is still having a large gap over men, the percentage of women participate in leadership and professional areas are high and even much higher than men. One of the reasons is that Philippine have a well plan women education system, which ensures women to have a high quality of education, for example The Philippine Women's University (PWU), a women academic institution founded in 1919. PWU is a non-profit university where educating young women for leadership and service, and successfully provide a high level education to women in Philippine. It proves that some of the women in Philippine did share gender equality, having a high quality of education and a chance of working professionally as well as taking part in political empowerment.
