Country Profile: Sierra Leone



Sierra Leone is one of the poor countries in West Africa, bordered by Guinea, Liberia, and the Atlantic Ocean. Following ten years long civil war, more than 80% of citizens are living in poverty line, and they are facing many challenges, so that the government recently re-establishing its security, promoting economic development through selling minerals and raw materials.

Political history

During 1991-2002, a brutal civil war broke out between the National Patriotic Front of Liberia led by Charles Taylor and the Revolutionary United Frontfurled by former Sierra Leonean army corporal Foday Saybana Sankoh. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah elected president on February in 1996 that signed a new peace in Sierra Leone. After Kabbah ended up his political career, Ernest Bai Koroma elected the presidentin 2007; He promised not tolerate to corruption and would strike at the major challenges of Sierra Leone.

Women current situation

Following ten years long civil war, citizens especially women faced many challenges; All these show us how serve is the gender inequality in Sierra Leone, not only in social level but also in personal level.
  • Women were subjected to rape and sexual slavery during the civil war.
  • Women always suffered from social discrimination and domestic violence;
  • Near 90% of women in Sierra Leone have been subjected to Female genital mutilation (FGM).
  • Women still have little right in society and family such as no right to inherit property,
  • Women cannot make a decision without their husband’s permission.
